I wonder how Mike has been. Doesn't seem to have much to do with the world wide web lately. I sent him a a card and text but havent' hear back. Not sure if I should have done more but I guess he doesn't want to be bothered. Other sources have told me one of his other friends doesn't hang with him much no more. I do worry about you Mike but if you want your privacy, that's cool. Just know I think about you and check if you've logged into myspace.

Okay, it has been a very long time since I posted, so I am a bit rusty. Soon I'll be spouting off about the world we live in. Since I walked away from the internet several months ago many things have happened. I am glad that Julie took care of it so well. I have yet to read her many posts since my departure, but now that I am back I will have some time to catch up on them.

There are many reasons why I walked away from the internet, and I will eventually let y'all know some of them. I am not sure if I'll be able to post as much as I used to BUT I will post.

As much as I wish that were all true and I can't put much faith in it.

If you read the front page story of the SF Chronicle on Thursday, Dec 14, 2005, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso and a line in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off that they must act immediately. The only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her, a very dangerous proposition. Just one slap of the tail could kill a rescuer. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually she was freed. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around, she was thanking them.. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same."

Study shows secret to gas-free beans

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two strains of bacteria are the key to making beans flatulence-free, Venezuelan researchers reported on Tuesday.

They identified two bacteria, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum, which can be added to beans so they cause minimal distress to those who eat them, and to those around the bean-lovers, Marisela Granito of Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela and colleagues reported.

Flatulence is gas released by bacteria that live in the large intestine when they break down food. Fermenting makes food more digestible earlier on.

Writing in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Granito and colleagues found that adding these two gut bacteria to beans before cooking them made them even less likely to cause flatulence.

They tested black beans, known scientifically as Phaseolus vulgaris.

"Legumes, and particularly Phaseolus vulgaris, are an important source of nutrients, especially in developing countries," Granito's team wrote in the report.

"In spite of being part of the staple diets of these populations, their consumption is limited by the flatulence they produce."

Smart cooks know they can ferment beans, and make them less

gas-inducing, by cooking them in the liquor from a previous batch. But Granito's team wanted to find out just which bacteria were responsible for this.

When the researchers fermented black beans with the two bacteria, they found it decreased the soluble fiber content by more than 60 percent and lowered levels of raffinose, a compound known to cause gas, by 88 percent.

They fed the beans to rats and then analyzed the rats' droppings to ensure that the beans were digested and kept their nutritional value.

When pre-soaked in the L. casei, the beans stayed nutritious and produced few gas-causing compounds, they reported.

"Therefore, the lactic acid bacteria involved in the bean fermentation, which include L. casei as a probiotic, could be used as functional starter cultures in the food industry," the researchers wrote.

"Likewise, the cooking applied after induced fermentation produced an additional diminution of the compounds related to flatulence."

We say goodbye to Mena the Pug. She's been with us since April of 2001. We got her from the Puppy & Kitty Nursery in Largo. I've wanted a pug since my neighbors had one. Well this little pug was asleep curled up with a wiener dog. We took her in a play room and she jumped, frolicked and just looked as cute as could be. I knew I had to take her home and I did.

We've gone through several pets over the years and I knew someday we'd have to say goodbye to her. This day came too soon as I knew it would. I say goodbye to a friend and wonderful companion. I miss your sweet face already. I miss the wag of your curly tail and the way your ears perk up. We have built a life long friendship that I will hold dear always.

Please find my grandmother. She'll take good care of you.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Concerned about politicizing her favorite charity, singer-actress Jessica Simpson on Wednesday turned down a invitation to meet with U.S. President George W. Bush, a snub that left Republicans dismayed.

The apparent final word that Simpson would be a no-show at a major Republican fund-raiser with Bush and congressional leaders on Thursday night came after a day of conflicting reports from her camp and organizers of the event.

The blond star of the film "The Dukes of Hazzard" still plans to visit Washington on Thursday to lobby members of Congress on behalf of Operation Smile, a non-profit venture offering free plastic surgery for disadvantaged children overseas with facial deformities.

People close to Simpson said she declined a request to appear that same evening at the gala fund-raiser of the National Republican Congressional Committee -- even after she was offered some private face time with Bush -- because Operation Smile is a non-partisan group.

"It just feels wrong," one Simpson insider told Reuters on Wednesday, adding that the actress keeps her political views private. "She would love to meet the president and talk about Operation Smile ... but she can't do it at a fund-raiser for the Republican Party."

NRCC spokesman Carl Forti said he was surprised at Simpson's position.

"It's never been a problem for Bono," he said, referring to the U2 rock star who has met regularly with political leaders of all stripes to promote various causes, including Third World debt relief. "I find it hard to believe she would pass up an opportunity to lobby the president on behalf of Operation Smile."

Although Simpson's publicists insisted she never had planned to attend the fund-raiser, Forti said the actress initially accepted the NRCC invitation when it was extended on Tuesday night, only to change her mind the next evening.

Forti said the Republican group had even arranged for Simpson to dine at one of the head tables with U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader John Boehner, an Ohio Republican. The NRCC hopes the $2,500-per-plate dinner event will raise $7.5 million for Republican candidates in the congressional midterm elections in November.

Simpson, 25, a Texas native who started out singing in her church choir, became a star on the Christian music circuit as a teenager and crossed over to the pop mainstream with her major-label debut album "Sweet Kisses" in 1999.

She became an overnight MTV sensation in 2003 as co-star of a reality show chronicling her first year of wedlock with fellow pop vocalist Nick Lachey, but she filed for divorce in December after three stormy years of marriage. Simpson is currently featured wearing cowboy boots and hot pants in a TV pizza ad.

Marijuana again tied to memory problems

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who regularly smoke marijuana may find their memories growing hazy over time, a study published Monday suggests.

In a study of long-term and shorter-term marijuana users, researchers in Greece found that both groups performed more poorly on tests of memory, attention and other cognitive abilities than a comparison group who'd only occasionally used the drug.

Long-term users - who'd smoked four or more joints per week for at least 10 years - showed the greatest deficits.

The findings, published in the journal Neurology, add to the conflicting body of research on the effects of marijuana on the brain. While many studies have suggested that long-time pot smoking dulls memory, attention span and mental acuity, some have found no large differences in these skills between marijuana users and non-users.

One recent analysis of 15 studies found only minor effects on memory among long-time pot users, and no clear effect on attention, language, reasoning and a number of other cognitive functions.

One problem is that it's difficult for studies such as the current one to establish a definite cause-and-effect relationship between marijuana and intellectual deficits, Dr. Lambros Messinis, the study's lead author, told Reuters Health.

Though the researchers accounted for a number of variables -- like education, use of other drugs and the presence of clinical depression -- it's tough to control for all the factors that could make heavy marijuana users different from other people, according to Messinis.

Still, he and his colleagues say, their findings are in line with certain past studies linking heavy, long-term pot smoking to "subtle" deficits in intellectual abilities.

The study included 40 marijuana users ages 17 to 49 who were in a drug abuse treatment program; all had used the drug frequently for at least five years, but half -- those considered long-term users -- had smoked for 10 years or more. They were compared with 24 adults the same age who had used pot no more than 20 times in their lives.

Overall, both long- and shorter-term marijuana users performed more poorly on tests of memory, attention and mental-processing speed. The proportion of study participants deemed "impaired," according to the researchers, was highest in the long-term group and lowest in the comparison group.

Long-time pot users showed the greatest problems on tests where they were asked to learn and remember a series of words. They were "significantly" below the published norms for these tests, according to Messinis and his colleagues.

It's not yet clear whether the intellectual deficits linked to marijuana are lasting, Messinis said, but research "generally supports" the notion that these problems are reversible after longer periods of abstinence. People in his study were required to have been abstinent only for the 24 hours before taking the tests.

Another unknown, according to Messinis, is whether marijuana use at a young age may affect the brain differently than use during adulthood. Knowledge in this area, he said, is still "poor."

Ga. Woman Who Married Teen Has Baby Boy

ATLANTA (AP) - A woman accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy she later married gave birth to the couple's child over the weekend, the woman's lawyer said Monday.

Lisa Clark, 37, gave birth to a 7-pound, 9-ounce boy Saturday, Daniel Sammons said.

The baby could be put in state custody unless Clark can arrange the necessary paperwork for a friend to take temporary custody, Sammons said. Clark was discharged from the hospital and returned to jail, where she is being held without bond.

``Right now, she's struggling with the trauma of having the child torn loose from her arms and possibly placed in foster care while she goes back to jail,'' Sammons said in a telephone interview.

Clark's teenage husband turned up in Ohio earlier this month after disappearing from a juvenile home in Georgia. It was not immediately clear where he was Monday.

District Attorney Lee Darragh did not return calls seeking comment.

A spokeswoman for Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services said the agency was not currently involved in the case.

Clark and the boy she is accused of molesting married in November. Georgia law allows children regardless of age to wed if there is a pregnancy.

Clark had been free on bond, but was arrested again last week after authorities said she had been communicating with her husband in violation of a condition of her release. Arraignment was set for Feb. 24.

Wrong! Unless I'm the exception to the rules. So far of all the money I've spent on an edumacashun (yes, I missed spelled it on purpose) I don't make s$%t. Nobody seems to care if you do have a degree. They want experience. The thing that I don't get is if I have a college degree then that says I can learn things. So just teach me how to do the f$%king job and we'll be fine. Bank tellers, they want you to have some kind of rocket science degree to make 7 (yes seven) dollars an hour. With that experience then I might as well work for NASA making 6 figures.

So right now, I'm going to loose yet another job due to downsizing in a couple of weeks. Hey this one isn't my fault. I'm broke, hungry and the repot man is camped out in my front lawn salivating.

With all my bad karma, I'll surely come back as a dung beetle.

A German inventor says he's found a way to make cheap diesel fuel out of dead cats.
Dr Christian Koch, 55, from Kleinhartmannsdorf, said his method uses old tires, weeds and animal cadavers.
They are heated up to 572° Fahrenheit to filter out hydrocarbon which is then turned into diesel by a catalytic converter.
He said the resulting "high quality bio-diesel" costs the equivilent of $1.00 per gallon.
Koch said the cadaver of a fully grown cat can produce two-thirds of a gallon of fuel - meaning around 20 cats are needed for a full tank.
He said, "I tank my car with my own diesel mixture and have driven it for 105,000 miles without any problems."
Annelise Krauss of the Dresden Animal Protection Association blasted Koch's new diesel though, saying, "This is as bad as experimenting on animals."

You have to read it to believe it!

(Burbank, CA -- January 19, 2006) TMZ has obtained a copy of a deposition of Paris Hilton taken last November, in connection with a defamation lawsuit filed by Zeta Graff, the ex-girlfriend of Hilton's former boyfriend Paris Latsis. Graff claims Hilton planted lies about her in the New York Post gossip column, Page Six. The item says Graff went "berserk" on a London dance floor and allegedly attacked Hilton, trying to remove Paris' multi-million dollar necklace before being tossed from the club. Hilton admits the incident never took place, but has denied planting the story.

In her deposition, Paris is asked about a companion with her that night whose first name is Terry. When asked if she knew his last name, Paris replied: "It is, like, a weird Greek name. Like Douglas."

Paul Berra, Graff's lawyer, asks Paris if she is aware that the Page Six article had been republished in various newspapers. "Were there U.K. publications?" Berra asks. Hilton responds "No...there is stuff in London." Paris' lawyer, Larry Stein, jumps in and says "London is a U.K. publication." Paris retorts, "Right. U.K. Whatever."

The deposition is filled with other intriguing comments from Paris. The following are excerpts:
Paris on what she said to Zeta Graff:"She is old and should stay at home with her child instead of being at night clubs with young people. And just that - I just...What else did I say? Just that she is not cute at all."

Paris on friendship:"I meet so many people. I don't even know some of my friends' names."
Paris on women who stalk women:"I would never say stalking. I'm not a dude. Like, I think a girl can only stalk a guy. She can't really stalk another girl."

Paris on world travel:"I was in Europe the whole summer, and all there is like French -- I didn't see anything because I wasn't in America."

Paris on email:"Whatever I write in email, it doesn't mean anything. It is just words I write."

Paris often made departures from the traditional deposition format, even blurting out at one point: "I'm so hungry."

I'm not having a good day today...lol

I made a few simple errors at work. I was paying bills for my boss and i made one for the wrong amount cuz I didn't pay attention to the invoice. Then I wrote the date in the box where the amout of the check goes. When I was balancing the checkbook I thought I was wrong so corrected it. I was right the first time.

My co-worker said she was going to have a better day today. I told her it was Friday the 13th. She said don't remind her. In the process, I think I jinxed myself.

Device Defused at San Francisco Starbucks
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Police defused an explosive device found in the bathroom of a Starbucks on Monday. No one was injured. Authorities were called around 1:15 p.m., after an employee reported finding something suspicious in the store's bathroom. About 100 people were evacuated from the store and apartments above it, and the street was closed to traffic, said Sgt. Neville Gittens. ``This was a good device. If it had exploded, it would have caused injuries or damage,'' said Gittens, who would not describe its size. Once the device was disabled at about 2:10 p.m., police allowed people back into the apartment building and reopened the street. The store, located at a busy city intersection, remained closed Monday evening while authorities investigated.

DETROIT (Oct. 25) - Nearly 50 years ago, Rosa Parks made a simple decision that sparked a revolution. When a white man demanded she give up her seat on a Montgomery, Ala., bus, the then 42-year-old seamstress said no.
At the time, she couldn't have known it would secure her a revered place in American history. But her one small act of defiance galvanized a generation of activists, including a young Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and earned her the title "mother of the civil rights movement."
Mrs. Parks died Monday evening at her home of natural causes, with close friends by her side, said Gregory Reed, an attorney who represented her for the past 15 years. She was 92.

Man Arrested After Tonya Harding Run-In
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Tonya Harding tussled in her home with a man she described as her boyfriend, prompting an emergency call by the figure skater-turned-boxer and an arrest of the man. Christopher Nolan was charged with assault and pleaded not guilty Monday. He told deputies Harding threw him down and bit his finger when he said she had too much to drink on Sunday. The 27-year-old Nolan was ordered to stay away from Harding and to avoid alcohol. Harding had a small cut over her right eye and an abrasion on her left cheek. Initially, Harding called 911 and said she was attacked by two masked men who came to her home and assaulted her before she could escape.
Nolan said he and Harding were roommates.
The 34-year-old Harding was banned for life from competitive figure skating after her former husband hired a hitman to club rival Nancy Kerrigan with a baton as Kerrigan left the ice during practice at the 1994 U.S. championships in Detroit.
The attack prevented Kerrigan from competing, but she recovered to win a silver medal at the 1994 Olympics weeks later. Harding finished out of the running.
More recently, Harding has tried her hand at pro boxing to mixed reviews.

British Office Compiles List of Odd Names

LONDON (AP) - Horatio Hornblower is an odd name, but consider his siblings: Azubia, Constantia, Jecoliah, Jedidah, Jerusha and Erastus.
Rene Jackaman, archive assistant at Cornwall County Record Office, found all those names after coming across a real-life namesake of C.S. Forester's fictional naval hero in county census records. The Hornblower name has been on record for centuries.
Inspired by that discovery, staff and researchers at the Cornwall Record Office compiled a list of more than 1,000 unusual names found in censuses as well as in births, deaths and marriage records going back as far as the 16th century.
``My all-time favorites are Abraham Thunderwolff and Freke Dorothy Fluck Lane,'' she said.
Other discoveries included Boadicea Basher, Philadelphia Bunnyface, Faithful Cock, Susan Booze, Elizabeth Disco, Edward Evil, Fozzitt Bonds, Truth Bullock, Charity Chilly, Gentle Fudge, Obedience Ginger and Offspring Gurney.
Levi Jeans was married in Padstow, Cornwall, in 1797.

Debate Rages on Marijuana-Flavored Candy

CHICAGO (AP) - As lawmakers crack down on the sale of marijuana-flavored lollipops, another debate is raging between their manufacturers and hemp product advocates over what is in the candy.
Hemp advocates say the candy makers aren't being honest about what's in their confection and that publicity is hurting the sale of legal hemp products, made from a variety of the cannabis plant.
Chicago's City Council and Suffolk County, N.Y. both have passed laws banning the sale of marijuana-flavored candies. Lawmakers in Michigan, New Jersey and New York also have introduced legislation to ban or control the candies.

California-based Chronic Candy advertises that every lick of its candy is ``like taking a hit.'' The company, though, says the candies contain only hemp oil, a common ingredient in health food, beauty supplies and other household products.
``There is nothing illegal in our ingredients and they are ingredients that are in most hard candy in the United States,'' said Tom Durkin, a Chicago attorney who represents California-based Chronic Candy.
Though they have no proof, hemp advocates maintain the candies contain cannabis flower essential oil, which they say is distilled from the flowers of the cannabis plant. That, they say, is illegal.
Rusty Payne, a spokesman for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, said cannabis flower essential oil would be illegal if it contains tetrahydrocannabinols, or THC, which is the illegal substance in marijuana, but he did not know whether it did.
Hemp oil has a nutty flavor, said Adam Eidinger, spokesman for Vote Hemp, an advocacy arm of the hemp industry.
``It tastes nothing like these lollipops,'' he said. ``These lollipops taste and smell like marijuana.'' Hemp has only a trace of THC, he said. It cannot be legally grown in the United States without a permit from the DEA, he said.
Hemp supporters acknowledge they cannot prove their claim about what's in the lollipops and neither the U.S. Food and Drug Administration nor the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration have tested the candies to determine their ingredients.
George Pauli, an associate director in the Office of Food Additive Safety at the FDA, said ingredients used in food and candy have to be approved generically by the FDA or be recognized as safe by scientists. Manufacturers are not required to register their formulas or ingredient lists with the FDA.
Payne said the DEA probably will test the lollipops in the future.
``Certainly, they are on the radar,'' he said. ``It's something we're aware of.''
While the debate over the lollipops' ingredients continues, states and cities across the country already are acting.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has issued a subpoena seeking information on the advertising and marketing practices of Chronic Candy.
``Just because something isn't illegal doesn't make it right. These are lollipops that are clearly targeted at kids,'' Madigan said. ``As parents, you spend an enormous amount of time and energy saying to kids, 'Don't smoke, don't drink, don't do drugs.' Anything the glamorizes or lures them into these destructive behaviors shouldn't be promoted.''
Durkin, the Chronic Candy attorney, said the lollipops are geared toward adults and the company has never intentionally targeted children.
He also said the company had given Madigan's office a list of ingredients in the lollipops although a Madigan spokeswoman said the office does not have the list.
While Vote Hemp has raised concerns about the contents of the marijuana-flavored lollipops, the group is not pushing to ban the lollipops, board member Tom Murphy said.
``We are pushing to make sure that people understand the difference between hemp oil, which is legal, and something that is illegal,'' he said. ``What legislators and states choose to do is their own business.''
